WAILUKU (AP) — Thieves broke into a Catholic church on Maui and got away with a safe and the priest’s car, a deacon says.
The break-in happened at the Holy Rosary Church in Paia at some point after the observance of All Saints Day on Tuesday night, Deacon Patrick Constantino told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Constantino said he arrived at the church Wednesday morning to find that the church office, rectory and multi-purpose building had been ransacked.
“They didn’t hit the church or preschool,” Constantino said. “They were looking for whatever they could get.”
The suspect or suspects entered the building through a screen on a window that leads to the kitchen, Constantino said.
They stole a safe containing cash, the priest’s 2005 white four-door Toyota Prius and other items.
The Holy Rosary Church serves about 175 families. It was established in 1926 while Paia was a sugar plantation.
